The church is at its best when it gives itself ____________.

Aristides, a Christian apologist in first-century Athens, described Christians to the Roman Emperor Harian this way:

“They love one another. They never fail to help widows; they save orphans from those who would hurt them. If they have something they give freely to the man who has nothing; if they see a stranger, they take him home, and are happy, as though he were a real brother.”

Good News and Good Deeds

Saint Francis of Assisi: “Preach Christ at all times and when necessary use _______________.”

“Jesus traveled through all the cities and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And wherever he went, he healed people of every sort of disease and illness.” Matthew 9:35

When the crowds were following Jesus, he “welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God [good news], and healed those who needed healing [good deeds].” Luke 9:11

When Jesus sent the twelve disciples out, “he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God [good news] and to heal the sick [good deeds].” Luke 9:2

Rest for the Rest of Us

“Now we who have believed enter that rest…” – Hebrews 4:3

I. Rest for the Worn – Out
“Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.” Psalm 127: 1

“The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of a rich man permits him no sleep.” Ecclesiastes 12:12
